On behalf of the MIT AgeLab, thank you for joining us at the 2023 PLAN Forum. This event, the first of its kind, brought together a tapestry of perspectives from the financial sector and beyond. Nearly 100 participants attended to network, collaborate, and learn. We extend special thanks to the Corporate Member organizations who support PLAN and helped us bring this event to life: CI Financial, Corebridge Financial, Edward Jones, Hartford Funds, MassMutual, Merrill, Raymond James, RBC, TIAA, and Transamerica.

We want your feedback! As we envision future iterations of this event, we would appreciate your thoughts about what went well and what could be improved. Please let us know your feedback by completing our survey. The form should take you less than five minutes to complete. You may also send your feedback to agelab-plan@mit.edu.

Event Description

The financial advisory business is changing. Longer lifespans are creating greater complexity in retirement planning, or what might better be called longevity planning. Longevity planning encompasses helping clients imagine their hopes and dreams for the future, facilitating often challenging family discussions, and identifying and preparing for the financial risks and life challenges that come with living for nearly 100 years.

Creating an advisory profession that addresses every aspect of longevity planning will require new ideas and ways of thinking. Are advisors ready to have new kinds of conversations with clients—sometimes fraught with emotion and uncertainty? Are the spaces and places in which advisors and clients meet designed with these new conversations in mind? Are advisors thinking not just about the products and services that they can offer to clients, but what the client’s experience will be, from the moment they walk into the advisor’s office until the moment they leave?

This interactive symposium will explore how the advisory profession can better deliver experience and discover adjacencies to their core business to produce client value that not only guides and informs, but excites and delights.

The event will be made up of three advisor-centered sessions: The first will discuss how the breadth and tone of conversations have changed with clients across the lifespan; the second exchange will explore what content is becoming critical to longevity planning, such as caregiving, aging in place, work, and technology; and the third discussion will address the context of client-advisor engagement, including online strategies and the psychology of office design.

Attendees will be invited to share their own experiences and visions of the future of advice, while being challenged to think in new ways—both through discussion and encounters with new possibilities—and learn what that future might entail.
