by Adam Felts

AgeLab Research Scientists Chaiwoo Lee and Bryan Reimer participated in panel discussions at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, on smart home technologies and autonomous vehicles.

Dr. Lee sat on a panel discussion titled “Can Smart Homes Improve Our Health?” The panel considered present and future for smart home technologies in the healthcare field, including possible near-term innovations as well as and barriers toward advancement. Dr. Lee noted the need to address possible stumbling blocks for successful utilization of health monitoring technology in the home: building trust around privacy and reliability; ensuring compatibility among systems and with the lifestyle of the user; and aiming to empower the user and promote independence to prevent the user from seeing health monitoring systems as medicalizing and operationalizing the home. This panel also discussed the role of family caregivers in decisions around using health monitoring technologies in the home, and how various stakeholders may be affected by the evolving nature of smart home technologies.

Dr. Reimer participated in a panel titled “Collaborative Driving and the Future of Trust in Mobility,” which discussed the interactions and collaboration between human drivers and intelligent machines in vehicles outfitted with advanced driver assistance systems.
