Joe Coughlin Highlights Senior Housing Industry Transformation at NIC Spring Conference

by Adam Felts

MIT AgeLab Director Joe Coughlin delivered a keynote address at the 2025 Spring National Investment Center for Senior Housing & Care Conference https://springconference.nic.org, where over 2,000 industry leaders gathered to discuss emerging trends in senior care.

Coughlin emphasized that the next generation of older adults—Baby Boomers and their Millennial children—will seek aspirational alternatives beyond traditional senior housing models and aging in place.

In a subsequent fireside chat with NIC founder Bob Kramer, Coughlin discussed evolving consumer behaviors, the transformative potential of technology and design, and stressed that industry transformation is not optional but essential.

The MIT AgeLab continues to explore these shifting paradigms in senior living, examining how innovative approaches to technology and home services can better align with the changing expectations and needs of tomorrow's older adults.
