US Secretary of Transportation visits AgeLab

The Honorable Anthony Foxx, United States Secretary of Transportation visited the AgeLab and received a tour of the instrumented vehicles from AgeLab director Joe Coughlin (left) and research scientist Bryan Reimer (right) on Monday, January 5.

Foxx also spoke to an audience of over 300 regarding the future of transportation, including outlooks for high speed rail, autonomous vehicles and how the DOT will encourage high safety standards as technological advances increase mobility.

As the global population grows older, the study of aging well has primarily remained focused on what individuals in later life can do to maintain their independence and autonomy in decisions ranging from finances to transportation and housing. Comparatively little attention has been devoted to the role played by trust.

AgeLab Initiates 85-Plus Panel Discussions

This fall saw the first of an ongoing series of panel discussions between AgeLab researchers and community members aged 85 and above. The ongoing meetings, which will take place on a bimonthly basis, will delve into such topics as age-friendly design, caregiving, mobility, financial decision-making, health and wellbeing, and more.

The AgeLab team, led by researchers Lisa D'Ambrosio and Julie Miller, hopes to gain insights into and perspectives from the 85+ popluation, with the goal of expanding the scope and relevance of AgeLab studies addressing the "oldest-old."
