Our Aging Workforce Needs Immigrants

The aging population in the United States will put untold pressure on the nation's social programs, while draining manpower from many key professions. How can the U.S. reduce the strain of its aging workforce? By letting younger workers in. But the current position of Washington Republicans is to dramatically restrict legal immigration.

"Though population aging may not be news to our political leaders, the question of whether they will prioritize the economic competitiveness of the nation over nativism remains open," write Dr. Joseph Coughlin and Lucas Yoquinto in Slate.

"Without immigrants ... we would be staring cross-eyed down the barrel of a far more threatening demographic future, filled with economic malaise, higher taxes, and even disastrous cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security."
