Fri, 06/21/2013

AgeLab Director Joe Coughlin presented a ‘Systems Approach to Technology, Innovation & Family Caregiving’ at the National Academies Institute of Medicine Forum on Family Caregiving June 19th in Washington, DC discussing how to align family caregiver behaviors with the creative application of technology to produce improved health outcomes in frail older adults. One in four American families provide an average of 21 hours per week in eldercare support to older family or friends. Caregiving, a major focus of AgeLab research, affects a wide variety of domains including healthy behaviors, financial planning, housing choices as well as transportation alternatives. Addressing issues such as medication compliance, social connectivity and personal care, Coughlin identified a series of research questions, technology-enabled innovations and possible national investment strategies for the IOM to address in a national study.
