Coughlin speaks at Volpe Center on new risks to older drivers

Mon, 09/26/2011

AgeLab director Joe Coughlin participated in a Roundtable on Age-Correlated Operator Performance at the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center. The performance limitations of inexperienced and aging drivers were discussed. Dr. Coughlin discussed the new policy challenges that come with new transportation technologies.

The video is available on the Volpe Cener website, here.

Dr. Coughlin discusses how the baby boomers will demand changes in transportation. Older Americans will have more education, discretionary income, better health and greater expectations than previous generations to remain engaged and productive across the lifespan. The 'smarter' car will present unprecedented learning and distraction challenges for the older operator.
