On September 20th, Dr. Chaiwoo Lee presented at the Transamerica Wealth and Health Symposium in Cambridge, MA. Speaking to an audience of financial advisors, Dr. Lee discussed how the responsibility of providing care for a loved one can affect people’s financial planning.
In addition to direct, out-of-pocket costs, caregiving exacts a toll on work life, family life, and health. In spite of this, caregivers do not always discuss the monetary burden of caregiving with their financial advisors. In an AgeLab study on family caregiving, of the 15 participants who saw a financial advisor, only seven talked to them about caregiving.
Dr. Lee's presentation illustrated the need for financial professionals to engage clients on the range of responsibilities they may have, including caregiving.
